KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 22 Tennessee Women’s tennis team registered a 4-0 victory to claim its seventh shutout of the season against No. 41 LSU on Friday evening at Barksdale Stadium. The Lady Volunteers cruised in doubles to secure the 1-0 advantage before taking down three Tigers in singles to clinch the match.
“We had a tough week of practice,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “I think the thing that our team thrives on is the energy that we provide each other every single time we come out on the court. You could tell that those losses last week hurt them. No matter how much as a coach you want to look forward to the next match, as a competitor there is still something about losing that just eats at you. Nothing against the teams that we played in the past, but it eats at you. So this week was tough but I am even more proud of the way that this team came out and fought today.”
Tennessee (11-4, 3-2 SEC) raced to the doubles point by tallying wins on court one and three against LSU (10-5, 2-3 SEC). The No. 57-ranked duo of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase secured the first win over Kenna Erickson and Anita Sahdiieva in 6-2 fashion. Lauren Anzalotta and Catherine Aulia locked up the doubles point with a 6-4 victory against Florentine Dekkers and Aran Teixido Garcia. The Lady Vols claimed the opening point for the 13th time in 15 opportunities this season.
After the Lady Vols acquired a 1-0 lead, Tennessee tacked on three singles victories to secure the match. Graduate student Alana Wolfberg took down Florentine Dekkers in a 6-0, 6-1 contest. Aulia added a win against Gaby Rivera in a 6-2, 6-3 outcome. Anzalotta rounded up the match by logging a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Kenna Erickson.
“It felt great,” Wolfberg said. ” I think coming off of last week, a couple of tough losses. I had a few things in my mind, in my notebook that I was set on. I was just positive from start to finish the entire match. My racket hit speed was up the entire match and I was focused on breathing and playing my game. It felt really good, yeah.”
