GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 16 Tennessee Women’s tennis team fell in a 5-2 defeat at No. 18 Florida on Sunday afternoon at Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The Lady Volunteers claimed a 1-0 advantage by registering the doubles point, but could not finish the battle in singles.
Tennessee (10-4, 2-2 SEC) seized the opportunity in doubles and posted wins on courts one and two against Florida (6-7, 2-2 SEC). The No. 51-ranked pair of Alana Wolfberg and Esther Adeshina tallied the first doubles triumph against Qavia Lopez and Malwina Rowinska, 6-1. The No. 57-ranked duo of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase secured the doubles advantage with a 6-3 victory over Bente Spee and Alicia Dundey. The Lady Vols have locked up the doubles advantage 12 times this season.
After the Lady Vols acquired a 1-0 lead, Tennessee only added one more point in singles. Senior Lauren Anzalotta notched a 6-3, 6-2 result against Malwina Rowinska.
The other five Big Orange members all fell to their respective opponents in singles. Adeshina dropped a 0-6, 4-6 decision to Qavia Lopez. Wolfberg came up short in her affair against No. 79 Carly Briggs, 2-6, 5-7. No. 121 Catherine Aulia could not outlast Alicia Dudney, falling, 3-6, 6-7 (1). Tomase yielded a 3-6, 5-7, 3-6 setback versus No. 80 Sara Dahlstrom. No. 27 Cabezas rounded up the match by finishing on the short end of a 4-6, 6-3, 5-7 affair against No. 45 Rachel Gallis.
