Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis will kick off their fall slate this weekend at the 36th annual Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C. The event will run Sept. 15 through Sept. 17 at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.
Play will begin each day at 9 a.m. with Friday seeing two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles. Saturday will consist of one round of doubles followed by one round of singles, and the event will conclude on Sunday with one round of singles.
Along with South Carolina and host Furman, other participating teams include Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Mississippi State, NC State, Ohio State, Tennessee and Wake Forest.
Admission will be free and limited parking will be available beside the tennis center and at adjacent lots. For those not in attendance, live streaming will be available for select courts at this link.
The tournament will consist of nine singles eight-player compass draws and four doubles eight-team compass draws.
The Gamecocks will send a squad of five to represent the state’s flagship in Greenville. South Carolina will be represented in five of the nine singles flights at the tournament and two of the four doubles draws. The team looks to build on the success of last season’s event, having won two of the four singles draws in 2022.
Three Gamecocks will be making their Garnet & Black debuts at the Fall Classic including ITA No. 106 Shahar Biran. Biran, a graduate transfer from Old Dominion, was the ITA Atlantic Region’s Most Improved Senior for the 2022-23 season.
Both junior Olympe Lanceleot and freshman Anna Kantor with also be representing the Gamecocks for the first time of their respective careers. Lancelot previously played for two season at Florida State while Kantor will be making her collegiate debut.
The trio of newcomers are joined by returning graduate Elise Mills and junior Misa Malkin. Mills tallied 13 singles wins during the previous season while Malkin claimed 17. Malkin’s sophomore campaign was highlighted by a perfect 7-0 record against SEC opponents.
