Wildcats Sweep Sooners 4-0 - University of Arizona Athletics

NORMAN, Okla. – In a nationally streamed match on ESPN+, the #17 Wildcats swept the #38 Sooners 4-0 at Oklahoma on Monday, March 6 under the lights.

The two teams faced each other nine days ago in the Blue Gray semifinals which saw Arizona advance despite dropping the doubles point. Once again the Wildcats proved to be victorious against the Big 12 school, putting on dominating performances in both doubles and singles to take home the doubles point and three straight set singles wins.

“The difference is we’ve been working hard in our doubles, and I think our guys came out and were the more aggressive team and a couple weeks ago we weren’t,” said head coach Clancy Shields. “We got to start playing fast and free and playing aggressive, and if we do that we’re a pretty good team.”

Gustaf Strom and Herman Hoeyeraal sped through their match at two doubles against Alex Martinez and Luis Alvarez, beating them 6-1. Nick Lagaev and Colton Smith clinched the point at three doubles defeating Siphos Montsi and Jordan Hasson 6-3.

It was a loaded singles lineup with only two repeat matchups from a week ago, #88 Smith vs. #121 Martinez at one singles and Jay Friend vs. Alvarez, both freshmen, at six singles. First to finish in singles was #117 Hoeyeraal with a big serve and a booming forehand to defeat #71 Nathan Han. The Norwegian gave Han his second loss this spring after taking the first set 6-4 then only letting up one game to win the second 6-1.

Smith cruised through his match against Martinez to win 6-2 in both sets. The Wildcat beat the Sooner in straight sets at Blue Gray as well. Strom defeated Montsi 6-4, 6-1 at three singles to clinch the match for Arizona who now trails only match behind in the series between the two teams.

The Wildcats hold an 11-3 overall record and are even on the road at 2-2 after the OU sweep. The team heads two hours north to Tulsa, Okla. to face off against the Hurricane for the first time ever on Wednesday, March 8 at 5 p.m. MT.
