Ljubljana, SLOVENIA– Virginia men’s tennis senior Chris Rodesch helped lead Luxembourg to a 3-2 victory against Slovenia in a Davis Cup World Group II tie on Saturday (Sept. 16) at the Tenis Center Tivoli in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The two nations entered Saturday’s play tied 1-1 after Rodesch dropped a singles match on Friday and his teammate, Florida State alum Alex Knaff, picked up a victory.
On Saturday, Rodesch and Knaff opened play with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in doubles to put their nation up 2-1, but Knaff was edged in singles to make it 2-2. Rodesch, playing the deciding singles match, topped Bor Artnak 6-2, 7-6 (3) to close out the tie and give Luxembourg the 3-2 victory.
Luxembourg and the 11 other nations who won their World Group II ties will compete in the World Group I Play-offs in 2024.
This is Rodesch’s fourth time playing in Davis Cup ties for Luxembourg (2019, 2021-23) with a 7-6 overall singles record and a 5-3 mark in doubles.
In other Davis Cup action, UVA alum Alexander Ritschard is a member of the Swiss Team that is competing in the Finals Group Stage. Switzerland is in Group B with France, Great Britain and Australia.
