Vanderbilt Women's Tennis | Dores Take Down Tigers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team returned home on Saturday and defeated the Memphis Tigers 4-0 for their first home victory of the season.

Vanderbilt was quick to act, taking the doubles point over the Tigers to start the day off strong. On Court 3, No. 17 duo Anessa Lee/Célia-Belle Mohr put the Dores in a good position with a 6-3 victory over Camila Soares/Monique Woog. Hot on their heels was the tandem of Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray, taking the early lead for the Dores with a 6-4 win against their Tiger opponents.

Vanderbilt continued to fight, taking back-to-back courts. Stammel led the team, taking the first singles point over her opponent with a straight-set victory. Holly Staff swiftly defeated Memphis’ Alice Amendola on Court 5, adding another win in straight sets. Lee closed out the match against the Tigers, taking Court 2 in straight sets and serving up a win for Vanderbilt.

“Awesome team match. I thought we competed really well on every court. We started out a little bit slow but brought our energy up, and we were a little more aggressive towards the second half of the doubles point. That went our way, and that was huge to have that momentum going into singles,” coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “We pushed some leads early on a few courts and held on to those to get first sets. It was huge for momentum for CB to come back and win her set 7-5, and Bridget played a really clean match on 3, as well as having Anessa and Holly come through in those second sets. It was a great team win—and this was a good team. They’ve already had some big wins this season and will have a great spring. Now we’ll recover and turn our focus to Northwestern next Sunday.”
