AUSTIN, Texas – The Utah men concluded their last match of the ITA Kickoff weekend this afternoon against UTSA. The Utes won the doubles point but ultimately dropped the match 4-1 and will head to Denver, Colo. for a match against Denver on Friday, Feb. 2.
The Utah men started off the UTSA competition securing the doubles point. After court one fell to the UTSA Roadrunners, courts two and three stepped up to claim the victory. On court two Jayson and Michael Blando downed the UTSA duo in a 6-4 dual. Soon after, Dylan Applegate and Geremia Rossi pushed their match into a tiebreaker, and took the upper hand winning 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker score on court three.
The squad ran into trouble during singles matches as the team dropped matches on courts two, three, and four. On court one, Geronimo Espin Busleiman took the first set 6-2, dropped the second 6-2, and pushed his match into a third tiebreaker set but was unfinished.
On court five, Gianluca Citadini also forced the match into a third set. After dropping the first set 6-4, Citadini swept the second set 6-0 and was trailing in a close 2-0 third set but did not finish. Despite pushing his first set into extra games, Rossi ultimately fell 7-5, 6-2 on court six as the Roadrunners clinched.
UP NEXT
The Utes will continue the season with a road match against Denver on Friday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. MT. Following the Denver match, the team will face UTSA once more in Denver on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. MT.
