Tar Heels win 4-1, Punch Ticket To NCAA Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —  Despite dropping the doubles point, the UNC women’s tennis team (32-1), defeated the No. 16 Florida Gators (18-8) 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament at the Chewning Tennis Center.

Today’s victory over Florida set a new single-season home win record with 18 home wins during the 2023 outdoor campaign.

After falling 3-6 on doubles court two, Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran won 6-3 on court three to force a doubles point decision on court one. After a back-and-forth battle, Fiona Crawley and Abbey Forbes fell 6-7. Florida entered singles play with a 1-0 advantage.

Down 0-1, the Tar Heels started singles on a mission. Reese Brantmeier dominated court one, winning 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match at one apiece. She was followed by a Reily Tran victory on court five to give North Carolina their first lead of the night. The Tar Heels finished the Gators season with back-to-back wins by Anika Yarlagadda and Fiona Crawley on courts six and one. 

Carson Tanguilig and Elizabeth Scotty’s matches went unfinished.

North Carolina will head to Orlando for the NCAA Championships for the twelfth time in program history and the eighth time in the last ten seasons.
