Rodenas Advances at NCAA Singles Championship


ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Pedro Rodenas advanced to the second round of the 2023 NCAA Singles Championship following his first-round victory Wednesday at USTA National Campus.
 
Rodenas, the 52nd-ranked player in the latest ITA poll, notched an upset over 29th-ranked Steven Forman of Northwestern. Rodenas posted a 6-4, 6-3 win for his 32nd victory of the year and his eighth over a nationally ranked opponent. The 32 wins now place the Madrid, Spain, native tied with three others for sixth in program history for wins by a freshman. He will meet [9-16] seed and No. 14 ranked Sebastian Dominko of Notre Dame in Tuesday’s second round at 10:30 a.m.
 
Later in the day, [9-16] seed and No. 12 ranked Garrett Johns dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to No. 54 Siem Woldeab of Texas in his first-round match. Johns concluded his senior singles season with a 20-15 overall record and an 8-11 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
 
The doubles competition will begin Tuesday with Johns and Rodenas set to battle No. 4 Trent Bryde and Ethan Quinn of Georgia in their opening round match. Time for the contest will not start before 2 p.m.
