Ostrzygalo Clinches Wildcat Win at NAU


FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Arizona women’s tennis won five singles matches on their way to a 5-2 defeat of Northern Arizona on Tuesday. Four of those victories came in straight-set fashion.

NAU’s Dayna Shoshyna and Dolavee Tumthong jumped out to a 3-0 lead on court one and came away with the 6-3 victory, but the Wildcats were able to answer with a 7-5 win by Belen Nevenhoven and Martyna Ostrzygalo over Pat Niewiadomska and Andrea Nogeura.

The Lumberjacks clinched the doubles point with Ana Guadiana and Ava Neyestani’s 7-6(6) win over Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins.

Arizona won the first set on five of the six singles courts, but NAU was able to get the first singles win of the day when Ava Neyestani defeated Tirunelveli 6-1, 6-1.

From there it was a quick Arizona victory when the Wildcats won the next four matches. Brandelyn Fulgenzi was the first Wildcat with a win, defeating Shoshyna 6-4, 6-0 minutes before Tanvi Narendran took down Noguera 6-3, 3-0 in a win by retirement.

Wilkins put Arizona one point away from the team win, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 takedown of Niewiadomska.

Ostrzygalo put the match away for the Cats, securing a straight-set win over Guadiana 6-1, 6-1.

Play continued on court three, and Midori Castillo-Meza came away with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(7) win to round out the score.

Arizona is back in action Friday, April 12 at 12:30 p.m. MST as the Cats travel to Colorado.
