No. 39 Arizona Falls to No. 31 ASU in Tempe


TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona women’s tennis closed out its regular season with a narrow 3-4 loss against ASU in Tempe Saturday.

The Wildcats (16-11, 4-6 Pac-12) had a strong start to the day, earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. No. 62 Reece Carter/Brandelyn Fulgenzi upset ASU’s No. 33 Chelsea Fontenel/Patricija Spaka in a 6-2 victory. Following the win on court one, Belen Nevenhoven/Martyna Ostrzygalo secured the doubles point for Arizona with a 6-4 win over Giulia Morletand/Sara Svetac.

The Sun Devils earned the first three points of the singles competition on courts one, three and four, putting the score at 3-1. 

Fulgenzi was the first Wildcat to earn a point in singles, with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over ASU’s Svetac. The win put the match score at 2-3 with the Sun Devils still in the lead.

After a first set loss (2-6), Arizona’s Teja Tirunelvelli bounced back to defeat Rachel Hanford on court six, winning sets two and three and tying the match score at 3. 

The final point of the match came down to the neck and neck competition on court two. ASU’s Fontenel won the first set 6-3, but Kayla Wilkins came back in the second with a 6-4 victory. The pair went back and forth in games in the final set, but Fontenel ultimately eked out a 6-4 win, securing the victory for the Sun Devils.

Arizona will head to Ojai, California next week to compete in the Pac-12 Championships.
