Multiple Tar Heels Advance In NCAA Women's Singles Championships


ORLANDO, FLA. — Fresh off winning the program’s first national championship, five Tar Heels began competition in the 2023 NCAA Singles Championship on Monday.

Top-ranked singles player Fiona Crawley quickly advanced to the round of 32 after she defeated Sara Dahlstrom (Florida), 6-4, 6-1 on Monday morning.

A few hours later, Carson Tanguilig won her first round match against Emmanouela Antonaki (Miss. St), 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to join Crawley in the second round.

Following a weather delay, Anika Yarlagadda became the third Tar Heel to move on to the second round after she defeated Amelia Horner (UCSB), 7-5, 6-2.

Abbey Forbes and Reese Brantmeier fell in their first round matchups.

The NCAA 2023 Singles Championship takes place each day this week with the championship match taking place on Saturday, May 27.

Tuesday also marks the beginning of the 2023 NCAA Doubles Championship. Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig are slated to compete at 4 p.m. while Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty are scheduled to compete at 4:30 p.m. 

The Doubles Championship will take place over the next few days with one round happening each day and the championship match taking place on Saturday, May 27.
