Miyoshi, Heck, Ozolins Off to ITA Fall Nationals

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois men’s tennis’ Kenta Miyoshi, Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins are set to compete in the ITA Fall Nationals from Nov. 1-5 in San Diego, Calif.

Miyoshi will compete in singles, while Heck and Ozolins will compete in doubles.

Sophomore Miyoshi qualified for the Fall Nationals after winning the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in September, while Ozolins and Heck qualified after winning the doubles crown at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Oct. 23 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The last time Illini qualified for the fall nationals was in 2019, when Alex Brown and Zeke Clark both competed in singles.

Six more Illini will also be competing this weekend at the Notre Dame Mini Duals: Tyler Bowers, Mathis Debru, Lucas Horve, William Mroz, Oliver Okonkwo and Jeremy Zhang

The format of the tournament will see players compete in pairs through a series of four matches. Each pair will play a doubles match against their opponents that is worth one point. They will then split up and each play a singles match against the same two players for another two points. The team that wins two out of the three matches between singles and doubles will advance to the next round as a team.

The winning pair of this event will secure wildcards into the M15 Notre Dame Open in the summer of 2024.

These two tournaments are the final events the team will participate in before Atkins Tennis Center hosts The Paine Schwartz Partners Champaign Challenger from November 12-19.
