OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the SEC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday, closing out the tournament with four singles wins to finish off the team’s weekend in Tuscaloosa.
The Rebels concluded the weekend 8-1 overall in doubles and 10-6 in singles to open the fall season.
The Stockholm, Sweden, native in Nikola Slavic came to play today as he downed Mert Oral of Michigan, 6-2, 6-1. Slavic completed an undefeated weekend in Tuscaloosa, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles, which secured him the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player honor.
Isac Strömberg also dominated in his match-up, securing a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Michigan’s Nicholas Steiglehner. With today’s win, the sophomore completed a perfect 3-0 weekend in singles and tallied his 15th career singles win.
John Hallquist Lithén tacked on another singles win for the Rebels, besting Wisconsin’s Oliver Olsson in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-2. The senior closes out the weekend with a 3-0 record in doubles play and a 2-1 record in singles.
Noah Schlagenhauf battled it out with Badger, Matthew Fullerton, but ultimately earned hard-fought 7-6 (1) and 7-6 (2) set victories to close out the SEC/Big Ten Challenge with a win for the Rebels. The Nuertingen, Germany, native picked up his tenth career doubles win this weekend, going 3-0 in doubles and 2-1 in singles.
“It was good for all our guys to compete again against Big Ten opponents,” head coach Toby Hansson said. “Now we will get back to work and prepare for the All-American Championships in a couple of weeks.”
After returning home from Tuscaloosa, the Rebels will have two weeks to prepare for the 2023 ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The tournament is set to run September 30-October 8, consisting of Pre-Qualifying (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), Qualifying (Oct. 2-3), and Main Draws (Oct. 4-8) in both singles and doubles.
