Men’s Tennis Finishes Up Successful Day at SEC/Big Ten Challenge


OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team capped off day two of the SEC/Big 10 Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Saturday, as the Rebels racked up six doubles victories and four singles wins. Ole Miss kicked off the morning with two rounds of doubles action followed by one round of singles play.
 
The Rebels started their day off hot in doubles play, winning six out of six matches to secure two perfect rounds. John Hallquist Lithén and Noah Schlagenhauf brought the energy quickly as they defeated Wisconsin’s Collin Bedhuhn and Matthew Fullerton, 6-1.
 
Isac Strömberg and Gordon Whitwell also saw an early 6-1 victory, matching up against Michigan’s Nicholas Steiglehner and Mert Oral. The eighth-ranked duo of Lukas Engelhardt and Nikola Slavic did what they do best and tallied another win for the Rebels, beating the Badger duo, Oliver Olsson and Mihailo Popovic, 7-5.
 
Ole Miss did not slow down in the second round of doubles, as all three courts secured wins again. Hallquist Lithén and Schlagenhauf continued their momentum by earning a 6-3 doubles victory over Purdue’s Daniel Labrador and Stefan Simeunovic.
 
Engelhardt and Slavic followed suit by besting Mujtaba Ali-Khan and Aleksa Krivokapic, 6-3. Strömberg and Whitwell rounded out the outstanding doubles showing by defeating Wisconsin’s Bedhuhn and Fullerton, 6-4.
 
The Rebels continued their momentum into singles starting off with Strömberg tallying a 6-3, 6-3 win over Badger, Beduhn. Hallquist Lithén took his match, 7-6 (3), 6-1, against Purdue’s Labrador to secure his first singles win of the year.
 
Slavic completed an undefeated weekend after besting Purdue’s Krivokapic, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Schlagenhauf dropped his match to Purdue’s Simeunovic, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 and Engelhardt was leading the way, 4-0, against Purdue’s Ali-Khan, before he was forced to retire due to injury.
 
Sunday’s SEC/Big Ten Challenge finale will begin at 10 a.m. CT with the playing of the final round of singles.
