Florida State, Virginia Share Women's Tennis Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Hibah Shaikh claimed Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors along with the Doubles Team of the Week nod with her partner Natasha Subhash. Florida State’s Laura Putz earned her first weekly accolade as Freshman of the Week.

Shaikh led the Cavaliers to two wins against top-10 teams including a 4-0 win against No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday at the ITA Indoor National Championships. Before this weekend, Shaikh only had one win against a top-25 singles opponent in her career. The Teaneck, New Jersey, native picked up two top-10 wins over Pepperdine’s No. 6 Savannah Broadus and Michigan’s No. 9 Kari Miller. Shaikh took the first set in her next match against UNC’s No. 8 Carson Tanguilig and was in a second set tiebreaker before the match was abandoned. Shaikh and Subhash earned a top 10 doubles win over the Tar Heels’ No. 7 duo of Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran on Sunday to clinch the doubles point. The 6-3 win marked Subhash’s 100th career doubles victory.

Putz helped Florida State to a pair of weekend sweeps over UAB, 7-0, and Georgia State, 4-0. The native of Munich, Germany, earned a straight set 6-3, 6-0 win against UAB at No. 6 singles. She also played to a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles against Georgia State.
