Ducks Fall at No. 25 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Playing its second straight match against a nationally ranked opponent, the 53rd-ranked Oregon women’s tennis team fell to No. 25 Arizona State Sunday, 4-0, at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
 
Facing a Sun Devils’ lineup that featured a top-15 doubles pair in addition to three ranked singles players, the Ducks (8-4, 1-1) dropped the doubles point while ASU (10-2, 1-0) claimed three straight-set singles victories.  
 
Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral battled ASU’s 14th-ranked doubles team of Patrija Spaka and Domenka Turkovic on court one, but fell 6-3. With a 6-1 win at No. 3, the Sun Devils’ pair of Chelsea Fontenel and Marianna Argyrokastriti got by UO’s Misaki Kobayashi and Myah Petchey, 6-1, to win the doubles point.
 
The Sun Devils singles lineup featured three players ranked in the ITA’s top 125: No. 114 Turkovic, No. 116 Fontenel and No. 123 Argyrokastriti.
 
Fontenel took on Luescher at No.1 and walked away with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Petchey fell in straight sts to Argyrokastriti, 6-1, 6-2, and Sedona Gallagher defeated Martinez Moral, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Ares Teixido Garcia, playing at No. 2 singles, took the first set off Turkovic, 6-3, while the second set was level at 5-5 when the match was completed. On court five, Karin Young stole the opening set from Spaka, 6-4, and the matchup was in set two when the match was clinched.
