Clemson, Notre Dame and Virginia Earn First Men's Tennis Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s James Hopper was named the first 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, joined by Clemson’s Stewart Aronson and Marko Mesarovic as the Men’s Doubles Team of the Week. Notre Dame’s Chase Thompson earned Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.

Hopper made his dual match debut for Virginia last week and went undefeated in both singles and doubles. The NCAA DIII transfer won the match-clincher in UVA’s season opener against Liberty and then posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles in the second match of the doubleheader against JMU. The Montgomery, New Jersey, native was playing up three spots when he posted his 6-0, 6-0 win as the Cavaliers had dropped the top three players from their lineup in the match.

The freshman duo of Aronson and Mesarovic was unstoppable, clinching the doubles point for Clemson in both matches against Brown and The Citadel. They were the first to finish against Brown with a commanding 6-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. Against the Citadel the duo finished first, sweeping their opponents, 6-0, as they did not allow the Bulldog duo a single point in the match at the No. 2 doubles position.

Thompson made his collegiate debut for Notre Dame over the weekend, dropping a combined five games across four matches on his way to sweeping two doubles matches and two singles wins in back-to-back matches against IUPUI. The Newport Beach, California, native posted a 6-1, 6-2 win to open the season at the No. 3 singles spot before recording a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles spot. The freshman picked up two 6-0 doubles wins with his partner Evan Lee.
