Cernoch Leads Four Tar Heels On Academic All-ACC Team

CHAPEL HILL–North Carolina’s Brian Cernoch has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and highlights the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced Thursday. Four University of North Carolina players made the team.

A senior exercise and sports science major from Rockville, Md., Cernoch earned All-America honors in singles in 2022 and finished the season ranked No. 25 in the final ITA rankings. Cernoch earned All-America honors by reaching the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship. A first-team All-ACC performer, Cernoch was recently named the 2022 Carolina Regional Most Improved Senior by the ITA.

Duke and NC State led the league with six players each on the academic team, followed by Virginia with five and Louisville and North Carolina with four.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
