Cal Signs Lechno-Wasiutynski - California Golden Bears Athletics

The California men’s tennis team added to its talented roster with the signing of Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski from Poland, Kris Kwinta – Cal’s Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis – announced Thursday.

A 6-foot-3 native of Poznan, Lechno-Wasiutynski is currently tied for 323rd in the ITF Men’s World Tennis Tour rankings and sits at No. 1,566 in the ATP poll. The 19-year-old has a career-best ITF junior ranking of 123 and a career-best ATP ranking of 1,422.

The right-hander had a good 2023, when he captured Poland’s under-18 singles national championship, won the singles title at the J100 Hanko ITF tournament in Finland, took home the doubles crown from the J200 Salsomaggiore in Italy, and won the J100 Manacor doubles title in Spain.

“Fryderik is very competitive,” said Kwinta, who also hails from Poznan and is a former member of the Polish Davis Cup team. “He’s a player who’s always fighting for the highest accolades in Poland, wants to become a Davis Cup player for Poland and has pretty high goals on his list. He’s very serious about the little things that are required to become a pro, so he’s certainly a great addition to the team in terms of maturity and a sense of direction. He’s a very talented player, he’s feisty, and he’s a great fit for us athletically and academically. We’re excited to add him to the group.”

The Golden Bears – who last competed in the NCAA Championships in November – open the second half of the season on Jan. 18, when they visit Saint Mary’s at 11 a.m. PT in Moraga and then host the Gaels at 5 p.m. PT in Berkeley.
