Hannah Viller Moeller has clinched three of Cal’s wins this season.


BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis team returns home for a nonconference match against Hawaii on Sunday at noon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
 
After splitting its last two matches on the road, No. 54 Cal has a 4-5 record (1-1 Pac-12), including a 3-2 mark at Hellman. Hawaii is 3-5 (1-0 Big West).

Cal Posts 4-3 Results In Last 3 Matches
The Golden Bears are coming off of a 4-3 victory at Colorado on Sunday after starting the road trip with a 4-3 loss at Utah on Friday in their Pac-12 opener. Before that, Cal fell to fifth-ranked Michigan, 4-3, last Wednesday in Berkeley.
 
Trailing the Wolverines 3-0, Cal rallied to get to 3-2 before falling in a thrilling match. The Bears got singles victories from Jessica Alsola, Hannah Viller Moeller and Berta Passola Folch. In the setback in Salt Lake City, Cal got singles wins from Alsola, Haley Giavara and Katja Wiersholm.
 
In the triumph over the Buffaloes, the Bears won the doubles point, with the 16th-ranked Alsola and Wiersholm defeating Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed, 6-4, to clinch. Berta Passola Folch also partnered with Hannah Viller Moeller to beat Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac, 6-0. Later, Passola Folch earned the first clinching win of her career when she beat Tokac, 6-4, 6-0, in Cal’s first conference win of the season.
 
Bears Edged Hawaii In 2019
Cal edged Hawaii, 4-3, in the teams’ last meeting in 2019 to improve to 8-0 in the all-time series. With the score tied 3-3 at the Hellman Tennis Complex, Maria Smith held off Roxanne Resma 6-2, 6-7(2), 7-6(5), to clinch the victory. Earlier, the 23rd-ranked Anna Bright and Jasie Dunk bested Resma and Michelle Pits, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.

Cal is ranked 54th in this week’s ITA Coaches Poll. In the ITA singles poll, Jessica Alsola – who has won nine straight matches to improve her record to 18-3 – is ranked 36th. The duo of Alsola and Katja Wiersholm (14-7) – which won in recent matches…
