CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina Fiona Crawley was named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Miami’s duo of Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert earned Doubles Team of the Week honors. Duke’s Shavit Kimchi and North Carolina’s Tatum Evans shared Freshman of the Week laurels.
Crawley recorded a pair of singles wins for North Carolina as the No. 6 Tar Heels defeated then-No. 26 Georgia Tech and then-No. 46 Clemson. The 19th-ranked senior from San Antonio, Texas, took down No. 50 Carol Lee of Georgia Tech, 7-5, 6-2, to clinch the match for UNC on Court 1. She then claimed a 6-4, 6-0, win over Clemson on Court 2 to secure the sweep for the Tar Heels. Crawley and Reilly Tran, ranked No. 73, clinched the doubles point against Clemson on Court 2 with a 6-1 win.
Schuknecht and Balzert earned their first ranked win of the season in No. 23 Miami’s 5-2 win over No. 36 Florida State. The duo from Germany clinched the doubles point for the Hurricanes by notching a 6-4 win over the No. 42 pair of Maelie Monfils and Ellie Schoppe.
Kimchi recorded two wins at the No. 2 singles position in Duke’s split weekend. The Sdey Hemed, Israel, native clinched the win on Friday against Clemson with a 6-1, 7-5, win against Daniella Medvedeva, marking the fifth time this season Kimchi has clinched a victory for the Blue Devils. She also recorded a 6-1, 7-5, win over GT’s Alejandra Cruz.
Evans helped North Carolina to its 2-0 weekend with a singles victory over GT’s Mahak Jain with a tiebreaking 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) win after securing a 6-2 doubles win over Kylie Bilchev and Scarlett Nicholson.
Six teams are ranked in the top 25 of the ITA team rankings with three teams in the top 10 led by No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 North Carolina and NC State jumping two spots to No. 8. Miami improved to No. 20, and is followed by No. 23 Georgia Tech and No. 24 Duke.
