SAN FRANCISCO – Junior Yura Nakagawa recorded a pair of opening-round wins to highlight the first day of play at the 2024 Battle in the Bay, Thursday at the California Tennis Club.
Nakagawa began the day by teaming with senior Elyse Tse for an 8-4 victory over USC’s Emma Charney and Imogen Haddad in the first round. Seeded No. 3, the Cougar duo will face Virginia Tech’s Mila Mulready and Ozlem Uslu in a Friday quarterfinal match.
In singles action, Nakagawa completed her day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mulready in the first round. Friday’s second round will see Nakagawa face Oklahoma State’s Marcela Lopez, a three-set winner of No. 3-seed Amelia Honer of UC Santa Barbara.
In the bottom half of the singles draw, Tse saw her comeback fall just short as she dropped a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5) contest against TCU’s Yu-Chin Tsai in the first round. In Friday’s consolation round, Tse will face Georgia’s Haley Gaudette.
