WTEN Set To Begin Regional Play


Who: No. 1 North Carolina (29-1, 13-0 ACC) vs.

Charleston Southern (16-7, 5-1 Big South)

Where: Chewning Tennis Center – Chapel Hill, N.C.

When: Friday, May 5, 2023 – 2 p.m. / 5 p.m. 

The Lead: After securing its third-straight No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels will face the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the first round of NCAA Regional action. The South Carolina Gamecocks and Old Dominion Monarchs make up the second half of the regional pool that will compete in Chapel Hill. 

Match one between the Gamecocks and Monarchs is set for 2 p.m. on Friday while the Tar Heels and Buccaneers will face off at 5 p.m. The winners of matches one and two will face one another on Saturday, May 6th at 4 p.m. for the opportunity to advance to the Super Regional round next weekend.

Storylines:

  • 2023 is the third-straight season that the Tar Heels have been selected as the No. 1 seed in the 64-team NCAA Championship field.

  • Earlier this season, UNC recorded its 29th victory in a row. 29 straight victories is the second-longest winning streak in program history. 

  • For the third consecutive season, North Carolina recorded an undefeated record at home.


From the Notes: Last week, Fiona Crawley won her 115th singles match as a Tar Heel. She is now in a four-way tie for eighth in all-time singles victories at UNC. 

Switching Sides:

  • Charleston Southern women’s tennis team won the Big South Championship for the third-straight year after defeating the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 4-3.

  • South Carolina women’s tennis senior Ayana Akli and sophomore Sarah Hamner both received First Team All-SEC honors this season.

  • Old Dominion blanked James Madison 4-0 to capture the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship. For three straight years, ODU has won a conference title capturing the last two in Conference USA.

  • Admission will be $5 per session or $10 for the men’s and women’s doubleheader on Saturday.
