CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina women’s tennis head coach Brian Kalbas has announced the addition of graduate transfer Abbey Forbes, who will join the Tar Heels for the 2022-23 season.
Forbes arrives from UCLA with a scintillating resume that includes two ITA All-America singles honors in 2020 and 2021 and a career singles record of 61-11, including a 44-5 mark in dual matches. She was the 2021 Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year and a member of the 2021 Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year with Jada Hart.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for our coaching staff to have such a talent like Abbey join our program,” said Kalbas. “She is the first grad transfer we have ever brought in and after a great career at UCLA we expect her to fit in perfectly.
“Abbey has played No. 1 singles for much of her career and will bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and talent to our program. This addition will only make us stronger as we continue to compete against the best teams and players across the country.”
The Raleigh, N.C., native graduated from UCLA with a degree in political science and concentration in American politics in the spring of 2022. Forbes was named the ITA Southwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award winner in 2022 and was a 2020 ITA Scholar-Athlete.
“The opportunity to come to Carolina has been a dream come true,” said Forbes. “I’m so grateful to Brian [Kalbas], Tyler [Thomson] and the Carolina tennis family for welcoming me in as one of their own. Competing for the Tar Heels has been a dream of mine since I was six years old, and I couldn’t be more honored to play in my home state of North Carolina.”
Forbes achieved a career high ITA singles ranking of No. 2 in September 2001 and No. 23 in doubles in March 2022.
“We recruited Abbey out of juniors because of two major factors – her amazing talent as a tennis player and the fact that she’s an ever nicer person,” added Kalbas. “To have her join us and continue her education in business school at the University of North Carolina is truly a blessing.”
