Women's Tennis Signs Top Greek Talent

STARKVILLE – Head coach Daryl Greenan and the Mississippi State women’s tennis program are excited to welcome Athina Pitta to its roster.

Pitta joins the Bulldogs out of Thessaloniki, Greece and will arrive on campus to begin her career in the fall along with five-star Jayna Clemens, who signed with MSU last November.

“We are extremely excited to have Athina be a part of our program,” associate head coach Sachin Kirtane said. “She’s had a lot of success in tournaments all over the world. But most important, after her visit we could see how well she would fit in with the rest of the team. She has an amazing work ethic, is very coachable and wants to improve. Her family has done a great job teaching her the right values and she will thrive here in Starkville.”

During her ITF Juniors career, Pitta has won 79 singles matches and 69 doubles matches.

Pitta played in the 2022 J4 Skopje in Skopje, Macedonia on Aug. 15-21 where she claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the final round of the tournament to clinch the Grade 4 singles title. Also in 2022, she won in the final round 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 of the J4 Preveza in Preveza, Greece to earn another Grade 4 title.

During her 2022 season, Pitta earned two Grade 4 titles with first coming at the J4 Ioannina in Ioannina, Greece on July 5-10 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory with partner Eleni Lazaridou. The second came at J4 Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria with partner Aleksandra Gabrovska. The tandem earned a 6-3, 6-3 win.

In 2021, Pitta competed at the J5 Paralimni singles tournament where she earned a 6-3, 6-1 win to claim a Grade 5 title. Pitta also competed in doubles with Lazaridou in 2021, and claimed a Grade 5 title at the J5 Paralimni tournament.

After winning a bronze medal at the U14 European Summer Cup, Pitta and two others became the first Greek tennis team of all-time to win a medal at the 2019 European Championships, advancing to the finals.

Pitta has had a fair share of wins in doubles throughout her career. In 2018, she competed at the Cosmote Mytilene Junior Cup where she claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory with Michaela Laki. A few months later, she participated at the Rhodes Cup with partner Laki in Rhodes, Greece. The duo earned a 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-3 win in the final to grab the Grade 5 title.
