Women’s Tennis Set to Open Spring Season on Jan. 20


SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women’s tennis team kicks off its Spring 2023 schedule on the road on Friday, Jan 20, before launching into the eight-match home portion of their schedule on Jan. 22, under fourth-year head coach Ric Mortera.
 
The Utes will open the Spring season in St. George, taking on Utah, for the season-opening Jan. 20 match. Idaho State pays a visit to George S. Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Jan. 22.
 
Utah will then travel across the country for the ITA Kickoff in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Jan 27-28. The Utes return to the Eccles Tennis Center following the tournament with a home doubleheader against Cincinnati and Montana on Feb 4.
 
The Utes host Denver on Feb. 10 and Indiana on Feb. 17 before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., where they will face Minnesota on Feb. 24 and Memphis on Feb. 25. 
 
Pac-12 play begins on March 3 at home against California, followed by Stanford on March 5. Afterwards, Utah will go on the road for five consecutive matches against BYU (March 11), Portland (March 17), Oregon (March 19), USC (March 31) and UCLA (Apr. 1). 
 
Utah’s final two home matches of the Spring season take place the first weekend in April, with Washington visiting on Friday the 7th and Washington State on Sunday the 9th.
 
Utah will close out its regular season on the road. The Utes will take on Arizona and Arizona State back-to-back on April 14 and 15, respectively. The Utes’ final match will be at Colorado on April 21 before heading to the Pac-12 Championships from April 26-29 in Ojai, Calif.
 
The Utes finished the Fall season in strong fashion, claiming two championships at the Jolene Watanabe Classic hosted by UNLV. Freshman Marcela Lopez won the singles title and paired with graduate senior Anastasia Goncharova to claim the doubles title.
