Women’s Tennis Opens Spring with Sweep


SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University women’s tennis opened the spring campaign with a clean sweep of NJIT, taking down the Highlanders 7-0 Saturday at Drumlins Country Club.

The Orange (1-0) dropped just one set in their first competition since the fall tournament season. 

Second-flight singles was the tightest match of the day as Zeynep Erman bested Joleta Budiman 3-6, 6-3, 10-2. Miyuka Kimoto handled her business at number one singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win as the final match to finish on the day. Shiori Ito cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at fourth-flight singles while Polina Kozyreva won in the fifth flight 6-1, 6-1.

Syracuse picked up the singles point, with Erman and Kimoto winning the top flight 6-4, Kozyrea and Ines Fonte combining to win second flight 6-2. Ito and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya won the third flight 6-3.

The Orange return to action Sunday morning back at Drumlins Country Club, hosting Boston University. First serve for doubles action is slated for 10 a.m. on ACC Network Extra.
