SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah women’s tennis team is hosting the Indiana Hoosiers Friday afternoon. The match will take place at 3 p.m in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.

LAST TIME OUT

Utah last went head-to-head with the Denver pioneers. Doubles had a slow start for the Utes with Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend losing to their opponents on court two, 6-3. However, Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale were able to keep Utah’s chances in doubles alive with their win, 6-4. Finally, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini clinched their match, 6-4, allowing the Utes to go into singles with one point.

Lopez finished first in the fifth position with her victory, 7-5, 6-3. Goncharova followed closely after on court four, winning 6-3, 6-4. Utah clinched the match following Horwood’s victory on court six, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Earning Utah their last point of the day, Tattini fought it out against her opponent and came out on top in the third set, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0. Denver was able to capture the two other singles points, but the Utes were still victorious, 5-2 after a close set of matches.

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 35-30 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac 12 opponent Washington State.

SCOUTING INDIANA

Indiana is 5-2 in their spring season. They are currently unranked and have no ranked singles or doubles players. The Hoosiers went up against the Cincinnati Bearcats this season, just two weeks before the Utes defeated them 4-0. Indiana also came away with a win against Cincinnati, 4-3.  

UP NEXT

Utah women’s tennis will hit the road for the second time this season for a set of games in Minneapolis, MN. The Utes will first take on Minnesota on Friday, Feb 24 at 1 p.m. then Memphis the following day at 11 a.m.
