Women’s Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision Against California

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women’s tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped Saturday, dropping a 5-2 conference result versus California at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins (6-4, 1-2 Pac-12) got singles victories from Fangran Tian and Elise Wagle after the decision was made. Jessica Alsola of the Golden Bears (5-5, 2-1) clinched the overall win. Alsola and Katja Wiersholm were victorious on the singles and doubles courts.

Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov gave Cal the advantage in doubles play, securing a 6-2 win against Tian and Ava Catanzarite on Court 2. Then, with Vanessa Ong and Sasha Vagramov of UCLA in possession of four match points on Court 3, No. 15 Alsola and Wiersholm prevailed against Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle in another 6-2 decision.

With the Bruins in search of their third singles first set, Ong was forced to retire during her tiebreaker with Hannah Viller Moeller on Court 5. Wiersholm then completed a 6-4, 6-1 victory opposite No. 87 Catanzarite on Court 3, making the team score 3-0. Then, in a matchup of nationally-ranked players on Court 2, No. 40 Alsola held off No. 78 Hance 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the overall result.

UCLA got on the board when Ivanov retired trailing 4-6, 5-5 versus Wagle on Court 4. Wagle has won five of her six dual-match singles decisions and nine of 11 going back to the fall portion of the schedule.
