THE FLATS – Georgia Tech did not drop a set on Saturday, pocketing a 7-0 victory over Gonzaga at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The win pushed the Yellow Jackets to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 at home.
Doubles
Tech swept doubles play to get an early 1-0 lead in the match. Tech’s duo of Kylie Bilchev and Alejandra Cruz got the jump on doubles, rolling to a 6-2 decision on court two. Facing Gonzaga’s Tiegan Aitken and Jenna Sloan, the Jackets raced out with a 3-0 lead and sealed the win, 6-2. Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura clinched the doubles point from court one, winning a hard-fought match over Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska. Tech went up a break at 5-3, but the teams quickly moved back on serve at 5-all. Gonzaga’s rally was short-lived as Tech won the next two games to pocket the match, 7-5, and clinch the 1-0 lead for Georgia Tech.
The Jackets completed the sweep of doubles action on court three when Rosie Garcia Gross and Monika Dedaj defeated Rose Hayes and Kianna Oda, 7-5. It was a back-and-forth battle, leaving the teams knotted at 5-5 before Garcia Gross and Dedaj won the next two games for a victory.
Singles
The Jackets quickly cushioned their lead in singles play, carrying momentum over from doubles action. Lee wasted no time jumping out with the lead against Broerman on court one, taking a 5-2 lead in the first set. She pocketed the victory, 6-2, 6-0, not dropping a game in the second set. Mahak Jain put Tech on the brink of victory, downing Oda on court four, 6-2, 6-3. Jain went up 4-1 in the first set to take an early advantage and secured the set, 6-2. Jain and Oda stood at 3-2 in the second set before Jain grabbed the next game for a 4-2 lead and sealed the win, 6-3, to give Tech a 3-0 match lead.
The match was clinched on court two when Bilchev topped Sosowska, 6-3, 6-2. The foes were on serve at 3-all in the first set before Bilchev won the next three games to take the set lead. She jumped out with an early 3-0 edge in the second and clinched the victory, 6-2, and the overall match at 4-0.
Finishing minutes apart, Tech picked up victories on courts five and three to extend their match lead. Garcia Gross added to the scoreboard with a triumph on court five, pocketing a 6-3, 6-1, decision over Hayes, before Cruz downed Sloan on court three, 6-4, 6-2, setting up a 6-0 tally. Ruth Marsh wrapped up play on court six, completing the sweep over Gonzaga taking home a 6-4, 6-3 win over Aitken.
