The University of Utah women’s tennis head coach, Ric Mortera, has officially announced the signing of Sara Akid. She is set to join the Utes for the 2023-24 season.
“We have really enjoyed getting to know Sara throughout this process,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “She’s an incredible person who will bring a lot of value both on and off the court to our program. I really believe the sky’s the limit for Sara’s tennis and we are getting her at a great time. Her experiences combined with her great work ethic should help us to continue to build the vision we have here. We can’t wait for her to arrive.”
The Casablanca, Morocco native has earned several top 10 rankings in her career prior to her signing with Utah. She was ranked No.1 in Morocco U18 and No. 6 in Africa U18. She also was No. 1 in Africa in U16 and had an ITF World Junior Ranking of No. 178. Akid made her first semifinals of an ITF $15,000 pro circuit event in Casablanca where she defeated the No. 37 ranked ITF Junior in the world. She also has found success in doubles earning a No. 957 ranking in the WTA Doubles rankings after making the semifinals of two ITF $25,000 pro circuit events in Casablanca and Agadir.
Utah women’s tennis is currently in the middle of 2023 action. The Utes are set to start Pac-12 action hosting Cal (March 3) and Stanford (March 5).
