Wildcats Roll Cowboys For a Spot in the Sweet 16


TUCSON, Ariz. – #15 Arizona [14] secured a spot in the Sweet 16 after rolling Oklahoma State in a clean 4-0 sweep on Saturday, May 6 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The ‘Cats maintained a perfect 14-0 record at home. 

Arizona started off strong with a doubles point capture on courts two and three. Wildcat duo Herman Hoeyeraal and Colton Smith gave the Wildcats an early advantage after defeating Cowboy tandem Becroft/Garcia. At three doubles, Gustaf Strom and Eric Padgham clinched the point for the ‘Cats with a 6-3 win over Basile/Roothman. The Swede and Aussie Arizona pair are 9-3 together this season. 

 

The ‘Cats snagged three straight set singles wins to clinch the victory against the Cowboys. At one singles, #55 Smith defeated #104 Tyler Zink, letting up only one game in the first set then breaking the Cowboy to secure the second (6-1, 6-3). The Arizona sophomore, who will make his debut at the NCAA individuals tournament, is 12-4 in the No. 1 spot. Next was #40 Ziverts who bested #94 Isaac Becroft at two singles and mirrored Smith’s set score 6-1, 6-3. Clinching the match for the ‘Cats was Hoeyeraal at four singles who took his opponent to three sets. The Norwegian native fell 5-7 in the first set against Chase Ferguson then let up one game in the second (6-1) to survive for a third which he conquered 6-4. 

It was the first time in program history that Arizona hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament and the ‘Cats fought hard to stay undefeated all season. Next up for the Wildcats is a road trip to Columbus, Ohio where they’ll face off against the winner of Ohio State vs. Louisville on either May 12 or 13 at a time TBD.
