Wildcats Leave New York With One More Victory


FLUSHING, NY.– Arizona ended their ITA National Indoor Championship weekend with a strong win against No.10 Texas A & M. The Wildcats dominated the court in a 4-1 victory leaving the tournament with a 2-1 record in their first appearance ever. The Cats defeated two highly ranked teams including No.3 Texas in day one of the event.
 

The Wildcats were forced to recover after giving A&M the early lead in the match with the doubles point. Herman Hoeyeraal and Eric Padgham were the first match to finish giving Arizona their first victory of the day as the defeated Luke Casper and JC Roddick 6-3. Texas A&M quickly came back in the last two matches securing the 1-0 lead.
 
The Wildcats had No.43 Jay Friend, No. 46 Gustaf Strom, Nick Lagaev, No.116 Herman Hoeyeraal, Iñaki Cabrera-Bello, and Casper Christensen representing in the singles line-up.
 
Hoeyeraal was able to put Arizona on the board in a straight-set victory defeating No.103 Guilio Perego 7-5, 6-3. Hoeyeraal dominated throughout the weekend going 2-1 in doubles and 3-0 in singles. Cabrera-Bello followed swiftly behind earning the lead for the Cats in the second straight-set win for Arizona 6-4, 6-3. Christensen extended the lead for the Wildcats 3-1. Christensen fell in the first set, but fought back taking-down Luke Casper 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
 
Securing the final victory of the weekend with the final score of 4-1 was Friend. Friend led in his first set 6-4, fell in the second set 3-6, but earned the point by retirement.
 
The Wildcats continued to make history throughout the weekend with first appearances and strong ranked wins.
 
Next up, the Wildcats are back home hosting New Mexico State at LaNelle. The Cats will take the courts Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10:00 AM (MST) and again at 1:00 PM (MST).
