Weekend Wrapped – Stanford University Athletics

LAS VEGAS/SAN DIEGO – Stanford competed in its final tournament tune-up before the start of dual match action over the weekend, featuring a total of six ranked wins across singles and doubles.

In Las Vegas at the Freeman Memorial, sophomore Alexandra Yepifanova won her first two matches to advance to the championship, defeating host UNLV’s Molly Helgesson 6-2, 6-3 on Friday and Florida’s Carly Briggs 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday. On Sunday, she fell to Pepperdine’s Lisa Zaar. 

Freshman Alexis Blokhina picked up a ranked win in the quarterfinals, taking down No. 94 Fangran Tian from UCLA 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while sophomore Valencia Xu rebounded from a semifinal loss to earn two weekend wins, including a ranked victory over UCLA’s No. 41 Ava Catanzarite 7-5, 6-0. In doubles, the duo of Xu and Yepifanova took down UCLA’s 11th-ranked Elise Wagle and Kimmi Hance 7-5.

Down in San Diego, the Cardinal battled through rain to play on Friday and Saturday before action was cancelled on Sunday. Connie Ma tallied two big wins, defeating No. 7 Kylie Collins from LSU 6-1, 6-0 and No. 29 Solymar Colling from San Diego 6-4, 6-2. Angelica Blake also went undefeated, including a ranked victory over No. 41 Kailey Evans from San Diego 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Sara Choy went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles with freshman Emma Sun.

Stanford opens dual match play on Thursday, Jan. 19, hosting UC Davis at the Taube Family Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
