Utes fall 4-3 to Golden Gophers

The University of Utah women’s tennis team took on Minnesota Friday night and fell 4-3. 

The Utes competed well in doubles action with Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova battled through a 7-5 loss in the No.1 spot. Samantha Horwood and Marcela Lopez took their match in the No. 2 spot into a tie break but fell 7(7)-6(4). The doubles point advantage went to Minnesota. The No. 3 doubles match was not played. 

In singles action, Utah picked up two wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots due to Minnesota forfeits.

The Golden Gophers were able to get wins in the No. 2 and No. 4 spots to bring the overall match score to 3-2. 

In the No. 3 spot, Kaila Barksdale defeated Zoey Well 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 to give Utah a tied match at 3-3. It came down to the No. 1 spot where Katya Townsend took her match to a full tree sets. Townsend’s first set went to extra games but she fell 5-7. She picked up a solid 6-4 win in the second set but fell 6-3 in the third set to give Minnesota the 4-3 win.

The Utes are set to take on Memphis at 11:30 MT in Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday, Feb. 25.
