Utah women’s tennis falls 4-0 to BYU

The University of Utah women’s tennis team was defeated by BYU Saturday afternoon, 4-0.

Utah had a rough start to the day with doubles. Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood were unable to hold off BYU team Emmie Moore and Bobo Huang on court two, losing 6-3. Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini were then defeated 6-4 by Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon, allowing the Cougars to win the doubles point. Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez’s match was left unfinished. 

The Utes couldn’t find any momentum in singles. Barksdale fell to Astle at second singles, 6-3, 6-3. Townsend was also unable to defeat Huang on court one, 6-1, 7-5. Lopez put up a strong effort on court five against Tina Li, winning the second set, 6-1, after losing the first. She and her opponent continued to fight it out through the third set and into a seven-point tiebreaker where she lost, 7-6(3), giving BYU their match clinching point. All other matches were left unfinished.

Utah women’s tennis is headed to Oregon to take on the Portland Pilots on Friday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m. and the Oregon Ducks the following Sunday at 12 p.m.
