SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men’s tennis wrapped up the first weekend of Pac-12 play with a match against the Oregon Ducks. After ceding the doubles point the Utes fell short after a tough singles battle for final score 4-1.
During doubles play, the Utes met some tough competition. After dropping the No. 1 spot, court two and three looked for victories to secure the point. On court two Jayson Blando and Michael Blando were tied 4-4 and held on to take a one-game lead to bring their score up to 5-4. On court three the Utah pair battled to take control but fell short 6-3 to the Ducks. The match at the No. 2 spot was unfinished with the Utes leading when Oregon took the point.
Utah took to singles play to secure a victory. Advantages looked promising on court four as Dylan Applegate took the upper hand on his first set, finishing in a near-sweep with 6-1. On court five, Gianluca Citadini also defeated his opponent in the first set, taking it 6-3.
Utah’s first point came on court four as Applegate won his second set 6-3, bringing the overall score to a 1-1 tie. The score was once more in a single-point deficit when Utah dropped court one. The Ducks took another point to bring the score to 3-1 after taking a victory on court three.
The Utes on courts two, five, and six pushed into third sets. The match clinched on court five as the Ducks took the final set and the fourth point.
