Utah falls 4-0 to UCLA

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s tennis program fell 4-0 in a tough battle with No. 14 UCLA on Friday afternoon. The Utes’ overall record moved to 10-7 overall.

Utah was off to a slow start in the doubles competition. On the second court, Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman battled against Kimmi Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, falling 6-3. Then, Sara Akid and Kaila Barksdale were defeated 6-4 on court No. 3 by Bianca Fernandez and Ahmani Guichard. The remaining match on the first court was left unfinished, with Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz closely trailing 5-4.

During the singles matches, Kaila Barksdale was defeated by Fernandez 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 3 court. Next to finish was the first court, where Lopez fell to Tian Fangran 6-4, 6-4. The Bruins had a 3-0 lead when Cruz fell to Elise Wagle on court No. 5 6-3, 6-2, allowing the Bruins to clinch the overall match victory. 

Although the remaining matches were left unfinished, three Utes fought into third-sets. Yuhan Liu dropped her first set 6-4, before pushing to a 6-4 win in the second set to force a third set. Liu was up 1-0 in the third before it went unfinished. 

Lyman followed suit and forced her match to a third after a 6-3 victory in the second-set. She also had a 1-0 lead in her third set before it went unfinished.

Sara Akid had a strong first and picked up a 7-5 win in the first set. Akid was tied 4-4 in her second set before UCLA pushed out for the  6-4 …
