San Diego, Calif. – The Utah men took down No.7 Harvard in a 4-2 match during the final day of the Ed Collins Spring Classic, claiming 13 consecutive wins and the San Diego Invite title. This is the first win against a top-10 ranked team this season for the Utes.
The day began with doubles play, where the Utah squad secured the point after playing through all three matches. On three Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula fell 6-3 to the Harvard duo.
On court two, Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman downed Harvard’s Steven Sun and Ronan Jachuck in a 6-3 match, leaving the point to be decided on court one. Here, Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac took care of business, finishing 6-4 and awarding the Utes with the doubles point.
Singles play was a lively sight, with many matches going into tiebreaker sets. On court four, Harvard secured their first point as Bugarikj fell to Ronan Jachuck 6-3, 6-3. The Crimson secured their second point on court five as Caula fell short 6-3, 7-5 in his match against Steven Sun.
The Utah men secured the next three points, clinching the match and walking away with a big victory for the team. On court six, Trhac downed Valdemar Pape in an astonishing 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 match. Following Trhac’s victory, Bastias took down Daniel Milavsky on court three in another three-set match finishing 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
The clinching point occurred on court one. Capalbo dropped his first set 6-1, but recovered and won two 6-4 sets back-to-back, claiming a win against the No.7 ranked Harvard as well as the San Diego Invite title for Utah.
UP NEXT
Utah will continue road matches this coming week as they also begin conference play. The first match will be against Oregon on Friday, Mar. 24 at 4 p.m. MT.
