SAN DIEGO – USC Women’s Tennis is primed for competition this weekend when they head south to compete in the ITA Southwest regional championship at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego.
Fourteen regional events are taking place throughout the month of October. In Divison I, regional doubles champions and finalists and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships, scheduled for Nov. 1-5 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The Women of Troy are well rested following a two week break from action since the Women of Troy Invite (Oct. 6-8) which saw Senior Naomi Cheong and Junior Parker Fry capture the doubles title. The same weekend, USC fifth-year Eryn Cayetano and sophomore Emma Charney claimed the doubles consolation title at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina.
Cayetano also saw action this past week at the Ranch Santa Fe 60k tournament alongside redshirt junior Snow Han. Han defeated Cayetano to make it to the tournament’s semi-finals, while Cayetano grabbed a win against the #190 ranked player in the world.
Now, the entire women’s tennis contingent will make the trip down to San Diego for Southwest Regionals. Charney will look to build on her team-best semi-finals appearance last year, while redshirt juniors Isabelle Lee and McKenna Koenig will look to top their doubles quarterfinal berth from last season.
Action will kick off this Thursday, where the Women of Troy will face opponents from various schools in the Southwest Region. Cayetano carries with her the No. 3 overall seed in singles, while Snow Han, Naomi Cheong and Emma Charney are all 9-16 seeds. McKenna Koenig and Grace Piper are 17-32 seeds.
In doubles, No. 3 seed Cheong/Han and No. 7 seed Charney/Cayetano earn first round bye’s.
