CARY, N.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team completed day three at the ITA Regionals in Cary, N.C. The Tigers started slow in singles but picked it up in the afternoon with two Clemson pairs winning two straight matches to advance in the main draw tomorrow afternoon.

“The singles this morning was disappointing,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “We underperformed and did not compete at the standard we have set for ourselves. In the afternoon, Ryuhei and Spencer played some very good doubles and won both of their matches. They both got better today and should have some good momentum heading into tomorrow’s match. Ethan and Matt also won both of their doubles matches and competed very well. I was definitely happy with doubles, but we need to get refocused and get after it when we return to Clemson. I am excited to get to work and finish the fall on a high note.”

Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Ryuhei Azuma fell in their matches in the main draw to NC State’s Staeheli (6-0, 6-1) and Van Sambeek (6-4, 6-4), respectively while Matt Pitts lost his match in the consolation draw to Krstic from Elon (7-5, 6-2).

Pitts and Ethan Silva impressed as a pair, beating Blickwede/Steveker of Queens University 6-3, 6-3 and defeating Campbell’s Petko/Balazi 6-3, 7-6.

Spencer Whitaker and Azuma played impressive tennis, taking the victory over Presbyterian’s Cardoso/Martens 6-2, 7-5 and beating Bottino/Cecere from Queens University 7-5, 6-2.

Plans Gonzalez and Max Smith fell in their doubles match to Duke’s Zhang/Heller 6-4, 6-2.

The doubles pairs of Silva/M. Pitts and Whitaker/Azuma will return to the court tomorrow afternoon in Cary for day three of ITA Regionals.
