Tian Posts Straight-Set Win in NCAA Individuals Debut

ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Fangran Tian of the UCLA women’s tennis team defeated Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State 6-4, 6-4 Monday at the USTA National Campus, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division I Championships singles tournament in the process.

Lightning in the area moved the match’s second set indoors. A delay of more than two hours followed the first set. No. 9-16 seed Tian next faces Natasha Subhash of Virginia Tuesday at a time to be determined. It will be a full slate for the Bruins, who will also be represented by the No. 5-8-seeded pair of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle in the first round of doubles action.

There was just one break of serve in Monday’s first set, with Tian collecting it at 4-4. Following a Tian hold for 6-4, men’s and women’s singles matches were relocated to six indoor courts

Tian broke Naklo for 2-1 in the second set and soon turned that into a 3-1 advantage. Naklo soon answered with a break of her own for 3-3. With the match back on serve, Tian turned in the day’s biggest break for 5-4. A deuce point would determine the final game, which Tian seized for the overall decision.

Hance and Wagle meet Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingworth of Wake Forest Tuesday. Match times for that one, as well as Tian’s second-round showdown with Subhash, will be announced when Monday’s matches are completed.
