Tennis and family - Washington State University Athletics

Washington State University tennis player Elyse Tse walked into the room quietly and sat poised across the table. Though she seemed reserved at first, Tse was quick to talk about her family and life at home in New Zealand.

She grew up in Auckland and loved to play sports, explore the outdoors and go to the beach with her family. She developed a passion for tennis early because her parents encouraged her to participate in a variety of sports. After trying a few, Tse found that tennis was her favorite and she began to play on a more competitive level alongside her twin sister. Sports continue to provide an opportunity to bond with her two sisters and her parents, and spend quality time with them when she is home.

Tse and her sisters, who are in New Zealand, have also found a way to stay connected through their shared Instagram foodie account. Their feed is filled with pictures and videos of meals they have had while dining out, mainly in New Zealand. Tse has aspirations to “add more American cuisine” to their account. She said they have frequently been given free meals in return for exposure on their Instagram account, which Tse said is always a really cool experience. Who doesn’t love free food!

She said her friends and family would describe her as “funny, talkative and hard-working.”

Her determination to improve her technique and skills in tennis landed her a position on the tennis team at WSU. That mindset also pushes Tse to work hard toward her digital technology degree, which she was drawn to through her love for digital creation and graphic design. Tse recently shared her talent with the WSU community when she was selected to create the logo for the WSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Cougar Sport Awards.

Spending quality time with friends and designing on her iPad are two ways that Tse takes a break from the busy schedule of a student-athlete. She prioritizes her relationships with family and friends, which has been an adjustment since moving to Pullman at the start of the 2022 spring semester. She spends a lot of time FaceTiming family back home but said that the transition to Pullman has helped her become more independent, which she is really enjoying.

Tse provided a few fun facts about herself. She favors energy drinks over coffee and tea in the mornings,…
