Styler’s Season Comes to an End at NCAA Singles Championship

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Junior Ondrej Styler of the University of Michigan men’s tennis team had his season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Monday (May 23).

The bracket was announced on Sunday, pitting Styler against the No. 1 overall seed Ben Shelton of Florida.

Styler took a 3-0 lead over Shelton to start the match. Each held serve for the next four games with Styler holding a 5-2 advantage. Shelton, ranked No. 2 in the ITA rankings with a 32-5 singles record, rallied winning the next five games to win the set, 7-5.

In the second set, Styler again took the lead, 1-0. Shelton went on another five-game run to the lead to 5-1. Styler served up the next game to keep Shelton on court, but Shelton was able to close out the match in the next game, 6-2.

Styler, ranked No. 27 in the ITA rankings, finishes his singles season with a 23-6 record. He went 19-4 during dual play including a 14-2 mark at No. 1 singles. Styler was 8-1 in the Big Ten to capture first-team All-Big Ten honors.

Styler and partner Gavin Young qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship but had to withdraw due to an injury. Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider‘s first match is tomorrow (Tuesday, May 24) against Sven Lah and Jake Bass of Baylor.
