Stanford Soars into Second Round


FLUSHING, N.Y. – No. 21 Stanford men’s tennis earned a victory in shutout fashion over St. John’s, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal improves to 15-10 this season.

The Cardinal won the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Samir Banerjee and Arthur Fery won 6-2 on court one and were followed in rapid succession by Nishesh Basavareddy and Max Basing on court three with a 6-2 result of their own.

The momentum carries into singles play, where all six players won their opening sets. Fery pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the top position, while Neel Rajesh earned a win on court four, 6-2, 6-3, to push the advantage to 3-0. Samir Banerjee clinched the match for Stanford in the second position, 6-4, 6-2, to send the Cardinal to the round of 32.

The Cardinal improves to 114-26 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, while the win over the Red Storm came in the first meeting between the two schools.

Stanford men’s tennis will see a quick turnaround to the second round, facing the winner of No. 13 Columbia and St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, May 6 at 9 a.m. PT.
