Stage Set For NCAA Singles Championship, Two Wildcats Battle Buckeyes

TUCSON, Ariz. – The stage is set for the NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. where #40 Jonas Ziverts and #55 Colton Smith will compete against two top-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the round of 64 on Monday, May 22. Smith plays at 2:30 p.m. MST and Ziverts at 3:30 p.m. MST.

Smith will make his debut at the tournament and face off against #11 Cannon Kingsley [9-16] in the first round. The Buckeye previously defeated Ziverts after three fierce sets in the NCAA Super Regional on May 13, where the Wildcats ultimately fell 2-4 to OSU in their second ever appearance in the Sweet 16. The Arizona sophomore garnered an 18-6 dual singles record and was second on the team in most individual wins, behind Strom who compiled a 19-3 dual singles record. Smith, who was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, played consistently between the No. 1 and No. 2 lineup spots, accumulating a 13-4 record in the No. 1 spot.

Making his third and final appearance at the individual tournament, Ziverts will battle #24 Justin Boulais [9-16] for a spot in the round of 32. Smith bested Boulais in straight sets during the Arizona vs. OSU match one week ago. The Swede compiled a 15-6 dual singles record, swapping with Smith between the top two lineup spots, and went 10-3 in the No. 2 spot. Ziverts was awarded Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and helped lead the team to back-to-back regular season conference championships. The fifth-year captain was also named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
