Berta Passola Folch was one set away from advancing to the singles main draw at ITA All-Americans.
CARY, N.C. – California women’s tennis junior Berta Passola Folch was one set away from advancing to the ITA All-American Championships singles main draw, but the Spaniard lost a three-setter in qualifying singles Tuesday to bow out of the tournament.
Passola Folch, ranked 106th in the ITA singles poll, won the first set but fell to Georgia’s 11th-seeded and 75th-ranked Guillermina Grant 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at Cary Tennis Park.
Playing in the consolation singles draw Tuesday, Cal’s 80th-ranked senior Lan Mi defeated Appalachian State’s Savannah Dada-Mascoll 6-0, 6-4, while sophomore Mao Mushika bested UCLA’s 97th-ranked Elise Wagle 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
On Wednesday, Cal will be represented in the singles main draw by senior Jessica Alsola, who’s ranked 30th, and in the doubles main draw by the 16th-ranked duo of Alsola and Mushika. Alsola will face Penn’s 70th-ranked Sabine Rutlauka in the singles opening round of 64 at 10:30 a.m. PT, and Mushika and Alsola will play Ohio State’s third-seeded and fourth-ranked Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff at a time to be announced.
The annual tournament ends Sunday.
