SAN FRANCISCO – The California men’s tennis pair of Carl Emil Overbeck and Alex Chang reached the main draw doubles semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic with a Friday quarterfinal win at the California Tennis Club. Chang booked a second match Saturday after winning in the singles consolation draw.
Overbeck and Chang defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan, 8-6, Friday and take on Arizona’s Colton Smith and Herman Hoeyeraal in the semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m. PT.
In the main draw singles round of 16, Overbeck lost a three-setter to Virginia’s third-seeded and 13th-ranked Jeffrey von der Schulenburg, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, while Cal’s Derrick Chen fell to Michigan State’s fifth-seeded and 37th-ranked Ronald Hohmann, 6-2, 6-4.
Playing in round of 16 qualifying in the singles consolation draw, Chang bested Stanford’s Anders Matta, 6-0, 6-1. With a bye in the round of 16, Chang next plays in the consolation quarterfinals against Baylor’s Luc Koenig at 10:45 a.m. PT on Saturday.
