No. 9 FSU Heads To Baylor For ITA Kickoff Weekend

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State men’s tennis team, which moved up to No. 9 in the national team rankings released Wednesday, continues its season by traveling to Waco, Texas, for the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

FSU opens against San Diego on Friday and then plays either 12th-ranked Baylor or Arizona State on Saturday. The Seminoles are 4-0 this season, including 2-0 away from Tallahassee, and own a ranked win over No. 7 Georgia. Last week, FSU swept the singles matches in a 6-1 victory over FAU.

Florida State is led by junior Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, who is the No. 12 singles player in the nation and is 4-0 in singles play. All four of his singles wins this season have been over ranked opponents, including the No. 1-ranked singles player Ethan Quinn from Georgia.

Youcef Rihane, ranked 24th nationally, is also 4-0 in singles play with one ranked win. Sophomore Jamie Connel, who is ranked 53rd in the country, is 3-0 with a win against Georgia over the 21st-ranked player nationally and has not dropped a set this season.

Junior Andreja Petrovic also has not dropped a single set this year, and his 3-0 record also includes a ranked victory over the 70th-ranked singles player. Senior Barnaby Smith, junior Loris Pourroy and sophomore Joshua Dous-Karpenschif all have two singles victories this season.

San Diego is 2-0 in 2023, including a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Texas A&M, and is led by Iiro Vasa, who is ranked 68th nationally in singles. Baylor has a 3-1 record after dropping a 4-0 decision at No. 1 Virginia on Sunday and boasts two singles players, No. 23 Finn Bass and No. 115 Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, and two doubles pairs, No. 3 Bass/Grassi Mazzuchi and No. 59 Paroulek/Velcz, in the national rankings. Arizona State is 2-0 with wins against Wichita State and Bryant.

Florida State and San Diego will begin at 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday. The winners from Friday’s matches will compete Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, and the consolation match is set for 3 p.m. ET Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available on Seminoles.com.
